Uchenna Kanu Reveals Super Falcons’ Next Move After Exit

by Victor Odia August 17, 2026
written by Victor Odia

Super Falcons forward Uchenna Kanu has apologised to Nigerians after Nigeria’s disappointing 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign and failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Kanu reacted after Nigeria lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the WAFCON quarter-finals and then suffered a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the World Cup play-off.

The forward admitted that the players failed to achieve their targets despite their efforts in Morocco.

“We gave everything but still wasn’t enough.”

Kanu also apologised to Nigerian fans who backed the Super Falcons throughout the tournament.

“This is a painful chapter, but it will not define us.”

She said the players would learn from the defeats and prepare for their next assignments.

“We will reflect, regroup, and come back stronger.”

Kanu had earlier spoken about the disappointment within the squad after the defeat to Cameroon. She said some players struggled to eat the following day because of the result.

“We are still sad. I’m still sad.”

The Super Falcons entered the 2026 WAFCON as defending champions but lost 3-2 to Malawi in their opening Group C match. Nigeria then defeated Zambia and Egypt to reach the quarter-finals.

However, Cameroon stopped Nigeria from reaching the semi-finals with a 1-0 victory. The defeat also ended Nigeria’s automatic route to the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria then faced South Africa in the World Cup play-off for another chance to qualify. South Africa won 2-1, with Christy Ucheibe scoring Nigeria’s only goal.

As a result, Nigeria will miss the 2027 Women’s World Cup, ending its run of appearances at every edition of the tournament since 1991.

Kanu has now called for the team to regroup and return stronger in its next international assignments.

by Thomasina Oseye August 16, 2026
written by Thomasina Oseye

Super Falcons defender Jumoke Alani has joined Turkish club Yüksekova Spor Kulübü from Nasarawa Amazons on a one-year contract.

Goal Nigeria reports that Alani made the move after helping Nasarawa Amazons during the 2025/26 Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership season.

The 21-year-old defender also earned a place in the 2025/26 NWFL Premiership Best XI.

The NWFL selected Alani among four defenders in its Team of the Season alongside Valentina Uroko of Edo Queens, Oluwabunmi Oladeji of Bayelsa Queens and Favour Iheagwaram of Abia Angels.

Before joining Nasarawa Amazons, Alani played for Edo Queens in the NWFL Premiership.

She also represented Nigeria at youth level before earning a place in the Super Falcons setup.

In 2023, Alani helped Nigeria win the women’s football gold medal at the African Games in Ghana.

In 2024, she received a Super Falcons call-up after Ashleigh Plumptre withdrew from Nigeria’s Olympic qualifying squad.

Alani later featured in Nigeria’s squad for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as an alternate player.

Yüksekova Spor Kulübü has now added the Nigerian defender ahead of the new season.

NFF Opens Investigation Into Super Falcons’ World Cup Exit

by Thomasina Oseye August 15, 2026
written by Thomasina Oseye

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has set up a six-member fact-finding committee to examine Nigeria’s recent results, following the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The decision came after Nigeria’s 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign in Morocco. The Super Falcons, who entered the tournament as defending champions, lost to Cameroon in the quarter-finals.

Nigeria then faced South Africa in a playoff for a place in the Inter-Confederation Playoffs. South Africa won 2-1, leaving the Super Falcons out of the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

As a result, Nigeria will miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament began in 1991.

Fanny Amun Heads NFF Committee

The NFF appointed former General Secretary Ambassador Fanny Amun, MON, as chairman of the committee.

Former Nigeria U-20 coach Ladan Bosso, former Super Falcons captain Desire Oparanozie, former Super Eagles captain Mutiu Adepoju and former FIFA referee Dr Alex Mana will serve as members.

Mallam Mohammed Nasiru Sa’idu, chairman of the Sokoto State Football Association, will serve as secretary.

The federation said the committee will examine the setbacks suffered by Nigeria’s national teams and recommend measures for the future.

The NFF said the committee will “investigate the setbacks and make recommendations”.

It also said the panel will “identify the factors responsible for the recent poor performances”.

Oparanozie Demands Changes

Meanwhile, committee member Desire Oparanozie has called for changes after the Falcons’ World Cup failure.

The former captain wrote: “No more survival on raw talent and past glory alone. As painful as this moment is, more pained on the lack of institutional structure. We need a fresh start; a start that evaluates everything. #UnavoidableTruth.”

Oparanozie made the statement after Nigeria’s 2-1 defeat to South Africa.

The result ended the Falcons’ hopes of reaching the 2027 World Cup and followed their quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at WAFCON.

The NFF will now examine the circumstances behind the recent setbacks involving the national teams and submit its recommendations.

NFF Election: Arewa Youths Rally Behind Ibrahim Gusau

by Thomasina Oseye August 14, 2026
written by Thomasina Oseye

Arewa youths have backed Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau ahead of the federation’s September 27, 2026 election in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

The group has called for fairness, due process and strict adherence to the NFF Statutes and Electoral Code during the election.

Speaking in Abuja, the group’s spokesperson, Sa’ad Mohammed, said stakeholders should assess the Gusau-led administration based on its record rather than focus only on Nigeria’s recent football setbacks.

“Football, as the world knows it, is a game of preparation, discipline, strategy and ability – and, importantly, a game of chances,” Mohammed said.

The group’s position follows criticism of the NFF leadership after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

However, the Arewa youths said the World Cup failure should not alone determine the outcome of the election.

The group also referred to the NFF Extraordinary General Assembly held in March 2026, where members approved amendments to the federation’s Statutes and Electoral Code and established the Electoral Committee and Electoral Appeals Committee.

The coalition also cited a vote of confidence in the Gusau-led Executive Committee during the assembly.

Meanwhile, the Arewa youths rejected attempts to link President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the NFF election.

The group said the football federation should manage its internal affairs without political interference and urged stakeholders to follow the rules governing the election.

“It is therefore neither responsible nor helpful to associate the Presidency with, or create the impression of Presidential involvement in, the NFF electoral process without credible evidence,” the group said.

The coalition also defended the North’s right to seek leadership positions within the NFF.

“We are not standing against another region. We are standing for ours,” the group said.

Gusau’s current Executive Committee will complete its four-year tenure in September 2026.

Ahead of the election, the Arewa youths urged eligible stakeholders to respect the electoral rules and allow delegates to choose the federation’s next leadership.

The group also called for a free, fair, transparent and credible election when NFF delegates meet in Lafia on September 27.

Nigeria’s First Women’s World Cup Miss Changes NFF Election

by Thomasina Oseye August 14, 2026
written by Thomasina Oseye

Nigeria Football Federation president Ibrahim Gusau faces calls to resign after the Super Falcons lost 2-1 to South Africa and failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

South Africa secured the win in Thursday’s CAF play-off in Morocco, ending Nigeria’s record of appearing at every Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991.

After the defeat, Nigerian supporters criticised Gusau and demanded changes at the NFF.

One supporter, @SarkinFoto, wrote: “The NFF President needs to tender a resignation letter before daybreak and NOT an apology letter.”

Similarly, Ben Marke wrote: “In a sane society this guy ought to resign and apologize for wasting our time.”

Another supporter, @Weirdmaskman NG, said: “A responsible person would read the room and call it quits while he’s behind.”

The latest criticism follows Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Super Eagles losing to DR Congo on penalties in the African play-off final in November 2025.

Meanwhile, Gusau had defended the NFF’s preparations before the Super Falcons faced South Africa.

“Well, we are doing our best. You know, sometimes people just like to talk anyhow,” Gusau said.

He pointed to friendly matches against Cameroon in Nigeria and Yaoundé and efforts to arrange a meeting with Senegal.

“We tried to organise a friendly match for them against the Senegal national team,” he said.

Gusau also defended the decision to arrange African opposition before the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

“We are coming for an African tournament. Nobody should expect us to go and arrange a match for the Super Falcons against Norway or Sweden or what have you.”

The NFF president had also apologised to President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians after Nigeria lost 1-0 to Cameroon in the WAFCON quarter-final. He said the federation would review its preparation, technical planning and operations.

However, Nigeria then lost to South Africa, ending its World Cup qualification campaign.

The defeat also means Nigeria will miss both the men’s 2026 World Cup and the women’s 2027 World Cup.

Gusau now faces further pressure as the NFF prepares for its next election, with supporters questioning his leadership of Nigerian football.

Erling Haaland Guinness World Records: The 4 Records He Holds

by Victor Odia August 14, 2026
written by Victor Odia

Erling Haaland has received four Guinness World Records certificates for his achievements with Manchester City and Norway. Guinness World Records presented the certificates to the Manchester City striker at the Etihad Stadium on 13 August 2026.

Fastest 100 Premier League Goals

Haaland holds the record for the fastest player to score 100 goals in the Premier League.

He reached 100 goals in 111 matches after scoring against Fulham on 2 December 2025. He scored the milestone goal from the penalty spot during Manchester City’s 5–4 win at Craven Cottage.

Before Haaland, Alan Shearer held the record after reaching 100 Premier League goals in 124 matches. Haaland beat that mark by 13 matches.

Most Goals in a 38-Game Premier League Season

Haaland scored 36 goals in the 2022/23 Premier League season, setting the record for the most goals by a player in a 38-game Premier League season.

He joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund before the 2022/23 campaign and scored 36 goals in 35 league appearances.

His 36 goals surpassed Mohamed Salah’s previous record of 32 goals in the 2017/18 season. Andy Cole and Alan Shearer had each scored 34 goals in earlier Premier League seasons, when clubs played 42 matches.

Most UEFA Nations League Goals

Haaland also holds the record for the most UEFA Nations League goals by a player.

The Norway striker has scored 19 goals in the competition between 4 September 2020 and 17 November 2024.

He scored his first Nations League goal against Austria in September 2020 before adding further goals during Norway’s campaigns in the competition.

Five Goals in One Champions League Match

Haaland shares the record for the most goals scored by a player in a single UEFA Champions League match.

He scored five goals against RB Leipzig on 14 March 2023 as Manchester City won 7–0 at the Etihad Stadium. He scored all five goals in 57 minutes before manager Pep Guardiola substituted him.

Lionel Messi had scored five goals for Barcelona against Bayer Leverkusen in 2012. Luiz Adriano matched the feat for Shakhtar Donetsk against BATE Borisov in 2014. Haaland became the third player to score five goals in one Champions League match.

Haaland’s Four Guinness World Records

Guinness World Records presented Haaland with four certificates at the Etihad Stadium in August 2026.

The certificates recognise his 111-match Premier League century, 36-goal Premier League season, 19 UEFA Nations League goals and five-goal Champions League match.

Guinness World Records described Haaland as a “multiple record holder” during the certificate presentation.

Super Falcons World Cup Qualification: How Nigeria Can Still Qualify

by Thomasina Oseye August 10, 2026
written by Thomasina Oseye

Nigeria’s Super Falcons can still reach the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup after losing 1-0 to Cameroon in the WAFCON 2026 quarter-finals.

The defeat ended Nigeria’s chance of taking one of Africa’s automatic World Cup places through the WAFCON semi-finals. However, the Super Falcons will face South Africa in the qualification play-off on Thursday, August 13.

GoalNigeria learnt Nigeria must beat South Africa to secure one of Africa’s two places in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Play-Off Tournament.

Cameroon booked a semi-final place with the win over Nigeria and secured a direct ticket to the 2027 World Cup. South Africa also moved into the play-off after Morocco beat Banyana Banyana 2-1 in their quarter-final.

The Super Falcons therefore face South Africa in a match that will decide which team advances to the FIFA Play-Off Tournament.

After the defeat to Cameroon, Super Falcons midfielder Christy Ucheibe apologised to Nigerian supporters.

“We are sorry to Nigerians that we couldn’t advance in the competition.”

Ucheibe also urged the team to focus on the World Cup route.

“The World Cup is still our target.”

Nigeria must now beat South Africa before it can continue its qualification campaign at the global play-off tournament.

The FIFA Play-Off Tournament will provide three final places at the 2027 Women’s World Cup. Africa has two places in the tournament.

The 2027 Women’s World Cup will take place in Brazil from June 24 to July 25, 2027.

Baresi carried the Olympic torch during the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics in February 2026.

He joined Milan as a teenager and made his senior debut in 1977. He remained at the club until 1997, making 719 competitive appearances and serving as captain from 1982 for 15 seasons.

Italy finished third at the 1990 World Cup. Baresi captained the team at the 1994 tournament, where Italy lost the final to Brazil on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

Milan retired his No. 6 shirt after his playing career. The club named him its Player of the Century in 1999 and appointed him honorary vice-president in 2020.
