The Italy coach search has entered a new phase, with Andrea Pirlo emerging as a candidate to replace Gennaro Gattuso after his exit from the national team role — GoalNigeria.com reports.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is reviewing several options as it searches for Italy’s next manager. Pirlo, Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini are among the names being considered.
Italy also explored the possibility of appointing Pep Guardiola. However, La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that the FIGC sees a move for the Manchester City manager as difficult, leaving Pirlo as one of the more realistic options.
Italy Coach Search Continues After World Cup 2026 Failure
Italy began its search for a new coach after missing out on direct qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Azzurri moved into the playoff stage but failed to secure a place at the tournament. They drew the first leg against Bosnia and Herzegovina 1-1 before losing the return match 4-1.
Gattuso left his position after the result, and the FIGC has now started discussions over his replacement.
Andrea Pirlo’s Playing Career And Coaching Record
Pirlo remains one of Italy’s most decorated footballers. He helped the national team win the 2006 FIFA World Cup and lifted several Serie A and UEFA Champions League trophies during his club career.
After ending his playing career, Pirlo moved into coaching. He managed Juventus, Fatih Karagümrük and Sampdoria.
The former midfielder is now among the candidates being considered for the Italy job as the FIGC continues its search for a new national team manager.
