Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso have launched a joint bid to host the 2032 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The three Alliance of Sahel States (AES) members met Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe in New York before opening the bidding process. Meanwhile, the three football associations will prepare a joint proposal as CAF begins assessing bids for the tournament.
Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso Submit Joint AFCON 2032 Bid
The football associations of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso presented their proposal to CAF and started the bidding process for the 2032 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Malian Football Federation said the three countries would prepare the bid together and meet CAF’s hosting requirements. Meanwhile, the proposal follows CAF’s decision to award the 2027 AFCON to Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda as joint hosts.
The three neighbouring countries belong to the Alliance of Sahel States. Military governments lead all three countries after separate coups. Each country also continues to face security threats linked to jihadist insurgencies.
Mali has five CAF-approved stadiums for international football and hosted the Africa Cup of Nations in 2002.
Burkina Faso secured CAF approval for its main stadium in Ouagadougou in 2025 after hosting AFCON in 1998.
Meanwhile, Niger has never hosted the tournament. The country is upgrading the General Seyni Kountche Stadium after CAF barred it from staging international matches in 2022.
CAF will decide the host nation or host nations for the 2032 Africa Cup of Nations after completing the bidding process.
