Morocco earned the highest FIFA World Cup prize money among African teams at the 2026 tournament after reaching the quarter-finals, while Nigeria received nothing after failing to qualify.

African nations shared millions of dollars from FIFA’s record prize fund at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Morocco leading the continent’s earnings after another impressive run on the global stage.

FIFA increased the total prize fund for the expanded 48-team tournament to $871 million, with every qualified nation receiving a guaranteed payment before additional rewards based on performance.

Goal Nigeria understands FIFA confirmed that the 2026 champions, Spain, received $51 million, while runners-up Argentina earned $34 million.

For Nigerian football fans, the figures also highlight what the Super Eagles missed after failing to qualify for the tournament.

Morocco Lead Africa’s World Cup Prize Money Earnings

Morocco finished as Africa’s biggest financial winners at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after reaching the quarter-finals.

FIFA awarded each quarter-finalist $20 million, in addition to the guaranteed participation payment provided to every qualified country.

Several other African teams also collected significant payments after progressing beyond the group stage, while those eliminated early still received FIFA’s guaranteed tournament allocation.

Each qualified federation also received $2.5 million from FIFA to support pre-tournament preparation, training camps and related expenses.

Why Nigeria Received No FIFA World Cup Prize Money

Nigeria did not receive any FIFA World Cup prize money because the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 tournament.

Had Nigeria secured qualification, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) would have been guaranteed at least $12.5 million, consisting of:

  • $10 million for qualifying and competing.
  • $2.5 million for tournament preparation.

Progressing further would have increased the federation’s earnings.

Round of 32$12 million
Round of 16$16 million
Quarter-finals$20 million
Fourth Place$28 million
Third Place$30 million
Runners-up$34 million
Champions$51 million

The prize money is paid directly to each national football federation rather than individual players. Each federation decides how the funds are distributed under its own agreements and regulations.

Why Morocco Finished As Africa’s Biggest Financial Winners

Morocco converted its deep run into the highest World Cup payout among African teams. The Atlas Lions reached the quarter-finals after eliminating the Netherlands and Canada before losing to France. Because FIFA awards higher payments at every knockout stage, Morocco received the largest prize money allocation of any African nation at the 2026 tournament.

How FIFA’s World Cup Prize Money System Works

FIFA awards money according to tournament progress. Every qualified federation receives a guaranteed participation payment before the competition begins. Teams then unlock larger payments by advancing through each knockout round, with the champions receiving the biggest reward.

The governing body also contributes towards tournament preparation costs, while national associations remain responsible for expenses such as insurance and additional travelling parties.

How African Teams Performed At The 2026 FIFA World Cup

Eight African countries qualified for the expanded tournament.

Why The 2026 World Cup Paid More Than Ever Before

FIFA almost doubled the tournament’s overall prize fund from $440 million in 2022 to $871 million in 2026 following the expansion from 32 to 48 teams.

The larger competition increased the number of participating countries and raised payments across every stage of the tournament. Spain collected $51 million for winning the title, compared with $42 million earned by Argentina after lifting the trophy in Qatar four years earlier.
